Suggested Center Implementation Strategies

The following strategies are designed to help centers implement STARS. Designated STARS centers should follow these strategies to ensure compliance and full implementation of STARS. Even if you are not a designated STARS center, these strategies will help you to implement speaker, tutor and mentor programs on your center.  Please note that these strategies are not listed in sequential order and may be conducted in any order the center wishes.

STRATEGIES AT A GLANCE

Form a CommitteeAssess Current Operations | Present Overview to Staff | Identify Student Involvement |Explore Volunteer Resources | Write Center STARS Plan

Form a Committee

It is recommended that centers form a committee to ensure every department has a voice in implementing STARS on center. You may also want to establish a Speakers Sub-Committee, Mentors Sub-Committee and Tutors Sub-Committee to ensure the three (3) components of STARS are effectively implemented. The sub-committees and the STARS Lead should be accountable to each other and work collaboratively in implementing STARS on center.

  • Questions to Consider:
  • Will we form our committee by requesting volunteers or making nominations?
  • What key staff should be involved?
  • Who would make the best Committee Chair?
  • How will we involve students in the planning process?
  • How will we involve all staff in the planning process?
  • Committee’s Role:
    • Develop a plan for informing all staff and students about STARS;
    • Inventory and assess current center operation (see below);
    • Write the STARS Plan and share it with center staff for feedback; and
    • Revise the CDSS plan to integrate STARS.
  • Committee Member Criteria:
    • Include staff from all levels and departments;
    • Include staff who (1) are open to change; (2) are available and committed for at least one year; (3) understand the student life-cycle (CDSS); and (4) understand the Center Information System (CIS), student scheduling, recordkeeping, the student evaluation process, and the Personal Career Development Plan (PCDP).

Inventory and Assess Current Center Operations

You may have existing components of STARS already on center. Take a closer look at what your center currently does in order to support STARS. The STARS Lead and committees, with input from center staff, should work together to evaluate current center operations and identify areas that need to be established or enhanced to support STARS.

Present an Overview of STARS to the Center

Click here for an introductory PowerPoint that may be used to introduce STARS to students and staff.

During this overview, the STARS committee may wish to solicit input from staff and students regarding the current center activities that support STARS and how to best integrate STARS into existing center operations.

Identify Student Involvement

Once you have completed the groundwork for establishing each component of STARS, you will need to determine how your students will be involved. For example, develop a process for referring students to tutoring (i.e. referral process for academic instructors, counselors, other staff; self referrals; etc.). Another example is to determine if speakers will address the entire student body or a targeted group, or a combination of both.

Explore Volunteer Resources

As you look to implement STARS on your center, you may ask “What volunteer resources do I have access to?”  This site contains Resources for Working with Speakers, Resources for Working with Mentors, Resources for Working with Tutors and information on Marketing and Promoting STARS.

Write the Center STARS Plan

Centers have the freedom to decide how they will integrate STARS on center. New methods and practices may need to be developed once an inventory of current center operations is conducted to ensure that STARS is effectively implemented. Centers may wish to use the Center STARS Plan Template to facilitate this process.
